Natural Skin Care
Cleaning the skin is important as it removes the dead cells from the surface of the skin. It will also remove the dust and dirt that chokes the pores on the skin. If the dust is allowed to accumulate, it can block the pores thus blocking the secretion of the glands from coming to the top of the skin proving it with the weapons it needs to fight against infections, toxic agents, etc. Besides enabling your skin to breathe naturally, it also gives the shine or glow to the surface of the skin.

Skin experts recommend avoiding soap because of its high pH. A high pH (alkaline) soap will dry the skin and diminish its life expectancy. The skin’s surface is mildly acidic, having a pH of around 5. Most soaps are well over 7, and some as high as 10. Soaps with a high pH will not only dry the skin but also eliminate its acid mantle (coating on the surface)

Deep Removal oil

Why deep removal oil? Beautiful, healthy skin is produced by deep cleansing and toning. Environmental assault, like haze, air travel, climate changes, and hormonal changes – all combined to make skin dehydrated and stressed. It is important to use natural botanical facial products to minimize long-term exposure to chemicals that may be harmful to the skin as well as to the environment.

Pentapeptide Luxury Cream – Indulge in the Ultimate Luxury

Contraction of muscles from facial expressions occurs up to 14000 times a day and is the cause of those annoying expression lines on the face. Botox injections are able to send a signal to the brain to stop muscular contractions, thus reducing the formation of wrinkles. However, this treatment is only effective for a short period of time may have harmful side-effects. Based on the recent developments in biotechnology, pentapeptide, which is a chemical compound containing five specific amino acids, can modulate nerve responses such that they can accept brain signals by up to 70 -80% for effectiveness. Pentapeptide has thus become the highly popular anti-aging skin in new-age beauty and skincare products. The precious pentapeptide is encapsulated in the avita Pentapeptide Luxury Night Cream which has the power to lift, firm and illuminate the appearance of your skin. This exclusively formulated product helps diminish wrinkles and age spots, making your skin luminous after application. Your skin will look rejuvenated and replenished.

Saturday, October 11, 2008   || Why ‘Green’ & SLS / SLES-Free Shampoo & Shower Gel

Our family is our greatest asset in our life. We believe all of us would wish to provide them with the best that we could afford, including the best for their health. If you share this desire, then why expose your loved ones to unnecessary toxics and chemicals when we could easily avoid them?

Children, especially are vulnerable. We should take actions to protect them from any potential health hazard.

SLS/SLES-free shower gel and shampoo are enriched with allergy free, moisturizing essential oils to keep your baby’s skin clean and soft, and free from irritation, dryness and itchiness. Our products are made from botanical plant extracts that are able to reduce oil molecules for gentle cleansing of your skin / hair / scalp and deep cleansing under the surface to remove embedded dirt. Yet it does not strip your baby’s natural protective oils. Our products are also suitable for people with dry and sensitive skin.

Read more about the effects of SLS / SLES below.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) Health Hazards

SLS and SLES are the acronyms for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate respectively. These chemicals are also known by 150 different names such as sulfuric acid monododecyl ester sodium salt. SLS is used around the world in clinical studies as a skin irritant and SLES commonly said to be contaminated with dioxane - a known carcinogen. BreastCancer.org defines carcinogen as any substance that causes cancer. In addition, it is stated that these chemicals cannot be metabolized by our livers and our body will need time to purge them, hence they have long lasting effects within our body. Thus, SLS and SLES could be considered as dangerous and highly irritating chemicals.
Nonetheless, these chemicals are inexpensive and effective foamers that are found in many of our personal care and household products. In fact, it is suggested that 98% of our personal care products, including those used by babies, contain SLS/SLES. These could include shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste, soap, detergent, and skin care products

So what are some of the potential harmful effects of SLS/SLES? The following is a summary from various sources:

- Direct damaged to hair follicle * Tangled hair * Split and fuzzy hair * Scalp irritation

- Skin damage (skin irritation / skin corrosion) * Eats away skin protection

- Swelling of hands, face, and arms

- Hormone imbalance * Absorbed through skin * SLS attaches to oestrogen (hormone) receptors * Hormonal chaos - body cannot recognize * Loses control of many endocrine functions

- Eye irritation / permanent eye damage in children * Can cause acute corneal damage * May lead to cataract in adults * American College of Toxicology # "tests show permanent eye damage in young animals from skin contact in non-eye areas"

- Protein De-Naturing * Existing proteins are damaged - leading to increased amount of healing needed * New proteins disruption whilst under construction * These are activities leading to early stages of skin cancer

- Carcenogenicity (potential to cause cancer)

With these potential health hazards, why use SLS/SLES in our common personal care and household products? The answer is simple - it is cheap. Products free from SLS/SLES are typically more costly. In fact, the American College of Toxicology has reported that it is safe for discontinuous and brief use followed by thorough rinsing from surface of skin. However, for prolonged contact with the skin, the concentration should not exceed 1%.
In that case, is it really safe? Though there is no concrete evidence that usage of products with these chemicals is indeed harmful, how often can we and our family really experience "brief" and "discontinuous" with overall exposure "not exceed 1%"? In addition, how "thorough" could the rinsing be especially in young children?

Consider the following as you think about its cumulative over prolong period of use:

- 98% of personal care products contain SLS / SLES such as shampoo, soap, shower gel, and toothpaste
- SLS / SLES usually one of the first ingredient listed, ie high concentration (6)- Easily penetrates the skin - enters and maintains residual levels in heart, liver, lungs, and even brains- Cannot be metabolized by our body system, ie once absorbed, stays within our body for a long time

Joyce Tan (Singapore) Jan 2008 I absolutely adore the avita Baybee Shampoo! It leaves my hair so soft and smooth that I have difficulty styling it! You see, I do not usually condition my short hair after washing just so it is 'rough' enough to be styled. The avita shampoo leaves my hair so-so-so soft (and wonderfully fragrant) without having to condition it further. I love the fragrance to the extent I actually look forward to getting in the shower just to wash my hair! Sounds strange?

Thursday, June 5, 2008   || Concerns Over Deodorant Chemicals

Are parabens safe when used on the skin? BBC News Item 11/01/04

Chemicals from underarm deodorants and other cosmetics can build up inside the body, according to a study.

British researchers have found traces of chemicals called parabens in tissue taken from women with breast cancer.
While there is no evidence parabens cause cancer, the scientists have called for the use of parabens to be reviewed. (Pic: The chemicals were found in breast cancer tumours)
The cosmetics industry insists that parabens, which are used as preservatives and are approved for use by regulators, are safe.
Dr Philippa Darbre and colleagues at the University of Reading carried out tests on samples of 20 different human breast tumours.
Writing in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, they say they found traces of parabens in every sample.
Their tests suggested the chemicals had seeped into the tissue after being applied to the skin.
"This is the first study to show their accumulation in human tissues," said Dr Darbre.
"It demonstrates that if people are exposed to these chemicals (parabens), then the chemicals will accumulate in their bodies."
'Drive tumours'
Dr Darbre said there may be reason for people to be concerned about the findings.
"Their detection in human breast tumours is of concern since parabens have been shown to be able to mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen," she said.
"Oestrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumours. It would therefore seem especially prudent to consider whether parabens should continue to be used in such a wide range of cosmetics applied to the breast area including deodorants."
Dr Philip Harvey, European editor of the journal, said the findings should be interpreted cautiously.
"Further work is required to examine any association between oestrogenic and other chemicals in underarm cosmetics and breast cancer."
Chris Flower, director general of the UK's Cosmetic Toiletry & Perfumery Association, welcomed the study.
"It is welcome additional information and we will want to examine the findings in detail," he told BBC News Online.
"However, parabens have a very, very good safety profile. We have an enormous amount of information which supports the safety of these chemicals and their use in cosmetics."
Caution
Delyth Morgan of Breakthrough Breast Cancer said: "This extremely small study does not demonstrate a direct causal link between deodorant or antiperspirant use and developing breast cancer.
"Further research is needed to establish the source of the chemicals found in the breast tumour samples and what, if any, the relationship is to breast cancer."
A spokesman for the UK's Department of Trade and Industry said government scientists would examine the findings.
"Parabens are approved for use in the UK and in Europe and all the information we have suggests they are safe to use.
"However, British scientists will examine this study."
Dr Richard Sullivan, head of clinical programmes at Cancer Research UK, said there was no evidence that deodorants were linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.
He said the latest study was very small, and had by no means produced conclusive results.
"The increased incidence we are seeing of breast cancer can be explained by many other factors," he said
There have been many warnings about the potential toxic effects of parabens and how the increase in breast cancer and all cancers could be directly attributed to chemicals in the body. (This includes of course the shocking revelations that HRT was directly responsible for another 20,000 women to contract cancer recently.) Not just from using underarm deodorants either. Virtually all so-called "skin Care" products have dangerous chemicals in them. Parabens are just one of a large bunch of toxic chemicals that no-one has any idea of what the long term effects are if you use them every day on your skin.
The hollow platitudes of reassurance from the chemical industry are starting to sound like a stuck record as more and more damning evidence is mounting against them and their toxic assault on the human species. Despite what they say, the studies have never been done on the long-term effects of any of these chemicals let alone the effects of perhaps ten or twenty or 100 chemicals interacting in the body.
I repeat my message THE ONLY SAFE SYNTHETIC CHEMICAL IS ONE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE CONTACT WITH!

Only use Avita Natural Botanical essential oil as deodorants and plant-based skincare cleanser:

Botanical essential oil used in aromatherapy can be likened to the hormones of plants and is made up of up to 250 different types of molecules which exist together in the most perfect combination proportion. Different botanical scents can stimulate the human potential and trigger different feelings and reactions in our mind and body. It is about harnessing different energy forces to support the balance within our body, improve air quality and strengthen our health.
You can dap essential oil on any parts of your body. Besides giving you a natural scented smell, more importantly, it also provides different therapeutic effects, depending on the types of oils used.

Saturday, April 19, 2008   || Why "Green" Clean - In Living Room & Bedroom

Why ‘Green’ Clean - In Living Room & Bedroom

Many chemicals in our normal households cleaning products used each day can harm you and your children. Indoor air carries a higher risk for personal exposure to toxic chemicals than outdoor air. Many of the chemicals in household cleaners and pesticides are not adequately tested, regulated or controlled.

The EPA, Environment Protection Agency, of the USA, estimated 2 to 5 million exposures to household poisons occur every year, and a significant number of them involve household cleaners.

In my previous entry, I highlighted the various pollutants found in the kitchen. In this blog, may I share with you the dangers found in our living room and bedroom.

The furnishings of our typical home can be harmful. Fabrics, synthetic leather and full leather that are labelled "wrinkle-resistant" are usually treated with a formaldehyde resin. These include no-iron sheets and bedding, curtains and sleep wears - any woven fabric, but especially polyester / cotton blends, marketed as "permanent press" or "easy care".

Many of our furniture is made of pressed woods products which emits formaldehyde and other chemicals. Carpeting is usually made of synthetic fibres that have been treated with pesticides and fungicides. Many office carpets emit a chemical called 4-phenylcyclohexene, an inadvertent additive to the latex backing used in more commercial carpets, which is thought to be one of the chemicals responsible for "sick" office buildings.

We all know that smell - lemon with a touch of engine oil - that we identify as furniture polish. What we may not identify with the smell is the irritability, depression, and other bad moods that can be the response to its use. How many people polish their furniture before a dinner party, only to wonder why they are so cranky before their guests arrive? Even worse, the smell of furniture polish can linger on furniture for weeks and months after use, causing a low level of air pollution that puts a strain on the central nervous system of everyone living there.

The petroleum distillates and solvents in commercial furniture polish are highly neurotoxic.

Wednesday, January 23, 2008   || Why Should You Care About Pesticides?

GREEN LIVING is a lifestyle concept and belief in caring for our natural environment and saving Mother Earth for our children and future generations. It’s about living our daily lives conscious with consuming only eco-friendly products and doing things which will not harm our environment or ourselves, directly or indirectly.

Why Should You Care About Pesticides?

There is growing consensus in the scientific community that small doses of pesticides and other chemicals can adversely affect people, especially during vulnerable periods of fetal development and childhood when exposures can have long lasting effects. Because the toxic effects of pesticides are worrisome, not well understood, or in some cases completely unstudied, shoppers are wise to minimize exposure to pesticides whenever possible.

Will Washing and Peeling Help?

Nearly all of the data used to create these lists already considers how people typically wash and prepare produce (for example, apples are washed before testing, bananas are peeled). While washing and rinsing fresh produce may reduce levels of some pesticides, it does not eliminate them. Peeling also reduces exposures, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the peel. The best option is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce, and choose organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

How This Guide Was Developed
The produce ranking was developed by analysts at the not-for-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) based on the results of nearly 43,000 tests for pesticides on produce collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration between 2000 and 2005. Many of the chemicals in household cleaners and pesticides are not adequately tested, regulated or controlled. An estimated 2 to 5 million exposures to household poisons occur every year, and a significant number of them involve household cleaners.

Many household cleaning products, such as furniture polish, oven cleaners, drain cleaners and even air fresheners contained chemicals that are classed as hazardous waste. Almost all commercially available floor and furniture waxes contain neurotoxic petroleum-based solvents. Neurotoxic chemicals can cause headaches, lack of concentration, irritability and more, and are best avoided and substitutes used. Toxic chemicals in the home can be eliminated simply by making thoughtful choices in the market after educating oneself about where the hazards are in common consumer products.

Common toxics in the kitchen
All-purpose cleaner: ammonia-based cleaners, breach, brass or other metal polishes, dishwasher detergent, disinfectant, floor wax or polish, glass cleaner, dishwashing detergent, etc contain dangerous chemicals. Some examples are:
Sodium hypochlorite (in chlorine breach) – if mixed with ammonia, releases toxic chloramines gas. Short-term exposure may cause mild asthmatic symptoms or more serious respiratory problems.
Petroleum distillates (in metal polishes) – short-term exposure can cause temporary eye clouding: longer exposure can damage the nervous system, skin, kidneys and eyes;
Ammonia (in glass cleaner) – eye irritant, can cause headaches and lung irritation;
Phenol and cresol (in disinfectants) – corrosive; can cause diarrhea, fainting, dizziness, and kidney and liver damage;
Nitrobenzene (in furniture and floor polishes) – can cause skin discoloration, shallow breathing, vomiting, and death; associated with cancer and birth defects;
Formaldehyde (a preservative in many products) – suspected human carcinogen; strong irritant to eyes, throat, skin and lungs.

Friday, December 14, 2007   || Reusable Cloth vs Disposable Diapers

The reusable cloth and disposable diapers debate

Diapers, also known as nappies in many parts of the world, have been the subject of great debate in relation to which is a more earth friendly option - disposables or resuable cloth? Having used both, I would have immediately said cloth diapers had less of an environmental impact, but that may not necessarily be the case.
An apparently thorough study carried out by an advisory board to the UK Environment Agency a couple of years ago drew this conclusion - cloth diapers had equal the impact of disposable nappies. I was quite taken aback - how could this be?
When both types of diapers were studied, the *whole* lifecycle of the product was scrutinized - materials, chemicals and energy consumed during production, usage and disposal. The environmental impact categories the diapers were assessed against were climate change, ozone depletion, human toxicity, acidification, fresh-water aquatic toxicity, terrestrial toxicity, photochemical oxidant formation and eutrophication.

To give you some idea of the environmental impact of both reusable cloth and disposable diapers on non-renewable resource depletion and global warming, the study states that over the 2.5 years a child would be in diapers; it would equate to driving a car up to 2200 miles.
Disposable nappies are made from petroleum byproducts and tree products such as fluff pulp. Cloth diapers are usually made from cotton - a pesticide, herbicide, synthetic fertilizer and water intensive crop.
While the study doesn't see too much difference between the two in terms of environmental impact at first glance, I most certainly do when you take into account several observations made. Disposable diapers will most always likely be very unfriendly to the planet, but there are opportunities for minimizing the impact of reusable cloth diaper usage.
The report notes:
"For the home laundered nappy system, the main source of environmental impact is the generation of the electricity used in washing and drying the nappies"
So this presents quite a few opportunities to lessen impact by:
- lowering washing temperatures
- use earth friendly washing detergents effective in cold water (Avita 4-1 Laundry is the best in the market. It is the only Green Label laundry detergent with eco-friendly fabric softening benefit. Its zero residual property ensures that no detergent ingredients are left on the laundry after rinsing. So, wear your cleaned cloths with complete confidence - See Below)

- stock up on diapers and wash only when you have a full load
- refrain from using additional wash enhancers
- air dry diapers
- offset your electricity use with green tags, or switch your electricity supply to a green provider
- reroute washing machine water runoff into your garden or install a greywater recycling system
- don't iron diapers

The other point to note is the diapers in the study were made of cotton, and I assume not organic cotton. The growing of cotton constitutes approximately 25% of the world's insecticide and more than 10% of the pesticide usage. Cotton is the fourth most heavily synthetically fertilized crop globally. The cotton industry has also been responsible for massive environmental disasters such as the destruction of the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan and Kazahkstan.

There are alternatives to "normal" cotton - organic cotton. Better still is hemp. Hemp fabric is said to be three times stronger than cotton, more durable and has a better ability to absorb moisture. I haven't seen 100% hemp diapers around, but you can certainly buy organic cotton/hemp blends - usually around 45% hemp and 55% organic cotton.

In summary, while you can't make disposable nappies "greener", you can certainly have less of an impact on the environment with reusable cloth nappies through careful purchase decisions and proper usage.

GREEN LIVING
brought to you by

GREEN LIVING is a lifestyle concept and belief in caring for our natural environment and saving Mother Earth for our children and future generations. It’s about living our daily lives conscious with consuming only eco-friendly products and doing things which will not harm our environment or ourselves, directly or indirectly.

DO YOU KNOW THAT…

SLES (sodium lauryl ether sulfate) is an ingredient found in the majority of soaps, shower gels and shampoo that we use daily and it is considered a probable carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. When why is it still being used in so many major brands? The answer is simple – it’s cheap!

SURFACTANTS are compounds that create bubbles and suds in household detergents but they are such potential harm that many European countries have already banned them. Many commonly used surfactants have adverse health effects that include decreased sperm counts and increased risk of testicular cancer.

PHOSPHATE is used in floor and laundry detergents to reduce the water hardness so as to allow the soap to clean more effectively. However, when phosphate-laden detergents are released into the household wastewater, they become an environmental hazard that can lead to algae bloom.

CHLORINE is found in most laundry bleach and detergents but it can trigger respiratory disorders, asthma attacks, and even neurological and behavioral effects.

SINGAPORE GREEN LABEL is a governmental certification scheme that awards environment-friendly products that have been designed to have less undesirable effects on our environment. It requires detergents to exclude ingredients like those mentioned above that are carcinogenic, allergenic and hazardous to environment.
